Portraits of a Horse Loving Girl

I met Laura in 2006 and I photographed her horse (at the time) “White Noise” along with the other horses on her property. This time I was called in to photograph her daughter’s horses Indigo and Sophia.

I drove through a thunderstorm on my way there and was worried that it would not blow over in time. Thankfully it did.

Wild Horses of Kleinmond

It was a cold and wet morning on the 30th of December 2010. I got up at 4:45am in hope of photographing the wild horses at sunrise. I arrived at the Rooisand nature reserve in Kleinmond, while it was still dark. It was quite cold and I only had a thin jacket on for warmth. I left the comfort of a heated car with my gear. I still had no idea what to expect. It had been raining on and off for a few days and I had to leave for Johannesburg the next day so I had to get something. I postponed my visit there due to the bad weather a few days in a row but was not going home without seeing the wild horses.

I made my way to the water and in the distance  I spotted 5 horses. I tried to go unnoticed but they saw me so I stopped to observe them for a while in case they would disappear into a secret hiding spot. I moved closer and paused every now and again. It was an amazing feeling standing there in nature. I have a spectacular view in front of me. Wild horses with a thick bush right behind them and the beautiful mountains in the background. Behind me the sun was rising and I was waiting for a spectacular sunrise as there was a decent gap of clear skies on the horizon.

Horses – Drakensberg – South Africa

On a recent visit to the Underberg in the Drakensberg I realized just how tough horses are. It is in the middle of July and of course winter here in South Africa. I grew up in Johannesburg and have traveled a fair bit through different regions of our beautiful country. But never have I experienced bone breaking weather like this! It was freezing!

I decided to get up early for sunrise on the morning of our departure. So with my gear packed and ready I went to some locations that I had scouted the day before. There is this field with horses and ponies with a few lines of trees in the background that I thought would make a fantastic scene to photograph.
