I spent some time in Soweto with kids playing street soccer. It was the Kia Sporting Chance Street Soccer regional finals.

I was asked to document the event but took a few pics “for me” in between all the chaos. These kids play with their heart and sole. Goalkeepers would leap onto the tar road to stop the ball and some played without shoes. What matters most is that these kids had so much fun. But that does not mean they are not competitive. Not at all. I noticed they are hungry to win. The determination on their faces amazed me.

Elana Afrika made an appearance and the kids loved her.

This kid took a blow to the face. He checked his teeth…they all seemed fine. Then he saw the ball and ran his heart out after it. It was amazing to see his determination.

This little guy posed for a photo. I asked him his name and greeted him in english, zulu and sotho but he did not respond. He was just too happy to peep over my shoulder to see what I was doing. So I turned the camera and took a pic of us. This made him laugh out loud, great memories :)

I saw his kids running into the room all excited to be with mom and dad. I quickly told them to sit down for a photo.

They politely sat down on the chair and started giggling and pulling faces. I did not instruct them how to pose. They just went with it and had a blast!
